Volleyball is one of the most popular sports in the world and it is very interesting sport when you play it or watch it. Volleyball is a simple game which can be played by anyone, at any level. There are two popular kinds of volleyball which are indoor volleyball and beach volleyball. All that is needed for a friendly game is a ball and a net or rope to knock the ball over.
History of Volleyball:
On
February 9, 1895, William Morgan, the YMCA physical education director in
Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA; created a new game called Mintonette. He
intended the game as a pastime to be played indoors and by any number of
players. The game resembled some characteristics of tennis and handball.
|
|
Incidentally, another
indoor sport was basketball becoming popular in the area, having been invented
just sixteen kilometers away in the city of Springfield, Massachusetts, only
four years earlier. Mintonette was designed to be an indoor sport less rough than
basketball for older members of YMCA, while still requiring bit of athletic
effort. The game became known as volleyball when an observer named Alfred
Halstead, noticed the volleying nature of the game at its first exhibition
match in 1897, played at the International YMCA training school. Soon, the game
spread rapidly around the USA to various YMCA chapters. In 1947, the Federation
International de Volleyball (FIVB), the governing body of the game was found.
Volleyball became an official Olympic event in the 1924 Paris Games. Beach
volleyball was sanction by the FIVB in1987 and became an official Olympic event
in the 1996 Atlanta Games.
How to play Volleyball:
The
object of the game is to send an inflated ball over the net in order to
ground it in the opponent’s court and to prevent the opponents from doing the
same. A team is allowed three touches before returning the ball. The ball is
put into play by a service, where the ball is hit by a server over the net to
the opponents.
|
|
The rally continues until
the ball is grounded on the court, goes out of bounds or the other team fails
to return it properly. The team winning the rally scores a point. When
receiving team wins the rally, it gains a point and the right to serve, and its
players rotate one position clockwise.
How to be a good Volleyball player:
Volleyball is a sport that
is very demanding on the arm. In volleyball you need to know the rules before
you play, just like any sport or game and the equipment and different skills
and techniques to handle the ball. To be a good volleyball player, you must
improve your serve by doing pushups and weightlifting. In volleyball you should
have strong arms to spike the ball correctly to the other team .In addition to this;
you need to know how you can control the ball balance to avoid the spike from
the opposing team.
Rules of Volleyball:
William
G. Morgan wrote down the first rules of the game which called for a net 6ft
6in high, a 25x50ft court, and any number of players. There were nine innings
with three serves for each team in each inning and an unlimited number of
ball contacts for each team before the ball is sent to the opponents’ court
.The rules changed over time. In the Philippines in 1917, the skill and power
of the set and spike were introduced, and four years later a “three hits”
rule and a rule against hitting from the back row were
|
established. In 1917, the
game was changed from 21 to 15 points. Nowadays modern volleyball allows
hitting from the back row and scoring was changed from 15 to 25 points. Either
team can score after each rally
Volleyball Court Dimensions:
The overall measurements
for a volleyball court are 60 x 30 ft. Each side of the court is therefore 30 x
30 ft in size .The court is divided into
30 ft square at the center line of the court and the attack line is marked 10
feet on each side of the center line of the playground. Some rules show the
attack line at 9, 10 however that includes the width of the line itself. A service line is marked 10 ft inside the
right sideline on each back line. This is the area from which the server may
serve the volleyball. The net is hung directly above the center line at 7 ft 4
inches and 8 ft for women and men respectively .Volleyball standards should be
set at 36 ft apart and 3 ft on either side of the sidelines. The minimum height
of celling should be 23 ft. preferably the ceilings should be higher.
Conclusion:
The sport is a way people can play, enjoy, do turning
and be instructors. In this report I speak about what is the history of volleyball, the rules
,how to play , the court dimensions and how to be a good player, we can say that Volleyball is
a great pastime for any one and is a great way to bond with family members and
friends. Basketball requires you to perform a diverse set of athletic techniques
including running, jumping and quick lateral movements. Playing an hour of
Volleyball provides a significant amount of aerobic exercise and can burn a
great deal of calories. Volleyball provides an excellent full-body workout and
can help you develop useful, lean muscle. It is a sport that can work your
whole body; it’s a great way to get your mind off things and is also a great
way to express yourself. We learn from volleyball teamwork that each and every person
must work as a team to win and succeed. Nowadays every country spends a lot of
money for this sport to have a strong team when they play against other
countries.
